After School Program FAQs

Below are some frequently asked questions about the Safe Passages after school program and more in-depth information about the day-to-day operations of the after school program, including emergencies.

Is After School "drop-in"?
No. Children are enrolled in our After School Program for the academic year. Enrollment for the following year begins in February.

What if my family has a change of plans?
Please notify the After School Program of any changes in your schedule that may affect your child's attendance. Please also inform us of any changes to your contact information so we are always up to date on how to reach you.

What hours is After school in session?
After school Program session is at 2:45-6 pm Monday – Friday, except Wednesdays and other minimum days, when ASP runs from 1:10 pm-6 pm

What if I want to pick-up my child early?
In order for us to provide robust, quality programming, students are required to be present for the after school session in the same manner as they are expected to stay for a full school day. Children may be picked up early for various reasons, including Doctor's appointments, family emergency, and transportation needs. Please be sure to bring a note for early pick-ups.

What is your policy on phones?
Our expectation is that all of our families adhere to the same "no phone" policy as we use during the regular day. We understand that parents wish their children to have cellphones in cases of emergency, and while we want to encourage the embracing of technology, we ask that parents support us in reminding students that these phones should ONLY be used in emergencies. If you need to contact your children during program, please do not hesitate to call us at (510) 592-4410. PLEASE DO NOT TEXT OR CALL YOUR CHILDREN DIRECTLY. This may confuse our students decision making when it comes to cellphone usage.

How does my child get to the after school program?
1st through 5th graders are expected to report to the upper playground area after the last school bell rings. There is an allowance for travel time and bathrooms breaks, but any other activities must be communicated with the After School program.

What is your policy regarding the vendors posted outside the school gate?
For safety reasons, we do not allow students to leave campus while participating with the program. By extension, this means that children are not allowed to go to the vendors located around the school.

What are the Afterschool dismissal and pick-up areas and times?
As per grant policy, and in order for us to provide robust, quality programming, students are required to be present for the after school session in the same manner as they are expected to stay for a full school day.

What if I am late picking up my child?
The Afterschool provides a window for pick-up extending until 6:00 PM. After 6:00 PM, a fee of $1.00 per minute will be charged. Please make every effort to be on time or to contact us at in an emergency.

What about homework?
Our program curriculum is not designated as a "homework club." While we support the academic success of all of our students, homework as a learning tool is most effective when it involves the family.
