Academic supports

Safe Passages provides homework help, tutoring and interventions for students to build their basic skills and gain the academic self-confidence necessary for success at school and in the community. The Academic Support Component addresses students’ individual academic needs through academic enrichment classes focused on strengthening literacy and math skills. Academic support activities are supported by Elev8 AmeriCorps Members and certificated teachers and other qualified instruction staff. During the last two years, 89% of students in the program improved one functional grade level or more academically.

Enrichment programming

Consists of project-based enrichment, instrumental music and performing arts activities, including urban arts and drama. The Leadership Development Component is integrated with enrichment and recreational activities and include exposure to College and Career Pathways. Specific offerings like mentoring and conflict mediation emphasize skill building, confidence, academics, and youth leadership opportunities.

Students also need health and fitness opportunities. Learning healthy eating habits and having access to healthy food choices can contribute to healthy lifestyles that last a lifetime. Regular exercise and sports contribute to good health and counter childhood obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure, all more prevalent in communities of color. Safe Passages Extended Day Programs provide students with a rich menu of health and fitness opportunities, including Nutrition, Cooking, Basketball, and Ballet Folklorico.
